Times of India on President Obama....

This is a recent article i saw on Times of India... its written by Indrani Bagchi...

It presents a very interesting view on where India stands, regarding the Obama Policies...

' Barack Obama enters the White House riding the crest of history. The sense of promise —of restoring America's primacy in the world will by and large be welcomed in India. Certainly, in large parts of the world, Obama will be a welcome change after eight years of George Bush, whose efforts to change the world as he found it had some disastrous consequences.

Over the past eight years, as George Bush wielded his scythe, in a strange sort of way, he helped to change the way the world looked at India. In many ways, the way India herself looked at India. India has gotten used to being on top of the US president's mindspace, whether as an exceptional democracy, a rising power or as the beneficiary of a unique nuclear agreement which pulled India out of a technology hole. India successfully "de-hyphenated" from Pakistan giving itself a lot of international legroom.

In an Obama administration, the India-US story could grow bigger. Or not.

There is little clarity on how the chips will fall on several issues in the Obama-India dynamic, issues that are very close to India. In order of precedence, they would be Pakistan, China, terrorism, nuclear issues, trade, all issues on which India has had a prickly relationship with the Democrat party vision.

Obama's own advisers are upbeat on the India question. Refusing to come on record on election day, those that TOI spoke to said an Obama that restores America's place in the world is exactly what India needs. "Obama is a 21st century leader. He understands that the US needs other major powers to get things done, and that certainly includes India.... Ultimately, India needs a US that is respected and able to get things done in the world, and Obama will help restore that."

But, Obama is yet to clarify his strategic vision of India. One of the reasons why the Bush presidency was good for India was that Bush proceeded from a simple premise — that India, warts and all, deserved an exception from the international system. US specialist on South Asia, Ashley Tellis, one of the main architects of the nuclear deal did a quick preview of Obama's India policy. "Obama says he will sustain the relationship with India. His administration will likely be dominated by people who view the relationship with China as the most important US relationship in Asia, and by individuals who have difficulty accepting either the legitimacy or the reality of India's nuclear weapons."

From all accounts, Obama starts out with the right ideas, of taking forward the India-US relationship. Early 2008, after an India gaffe in 2007 (when his campaign described Hillary Clinton as D-Punjab), he wrote a piece for an Indian-American newspaper where he said, "The world's oldest democracy (US) and the world's largest democracy (India) are natural partners, sharing important interests and fundamental democratic values... And that is why I will move forward to build a close strategic partnership between the US and India when I am president of the United States."

However, his commitment to removing the sources of terror from Pakistan-Afghanistan may have the unfortunate effect of reviving yet another form of "hyphenation", this time on terrorism, which will be far more dangerous, certainly so far as India is concerned.

While on the one hand he says he wants to appoint former US president Bill Clinton as his special envoy on Kashmir, in another recent interview, Obama said, "We should probably try to facilitate a better understanding between Pakistan and India and try to resolve the Kashmir crisis so that they can stay focused not on India but on the situation with those militants." This is clearly a considered position, because on September 25, in another interview to Arms Control Today, Obama said, "I will continue support of the ongoing Indian-Pakistani efforts to resolve the Kashmir problem in order to address the political roots of the arms race between India and Pakistan."

This is not music to Indian ears. It shows only one thing — that there will be a long period of painful diplomatic exchanges before the Obama administration can be made to realise that the "Kashmir problem" is just an alibi for Pakistan as it seeks to secure its objectives in Afghanistan and have its way vis-a-vis India.

Many of Obama's advisers are still in the "solve Kashmir" phase, between India and Pakistan. Why this can cause complications for India?

As the US gets more involved in disentangling Pakistan and Afghanistan from terrorism, Taliban and al-Qaida, it will be tempting, for Democrats to push a "Kashmir solution" as a carrot for Pakistan to undertake tough policies on its northwestern border. Already Pakistan army chief Ashfaque Kiyani has reportedly told US generals that he cannot concentrate whole-heartedly on two borders at once. This argument has clearly been made after Pakistan detected "fertile ground" in the Obama camp.

In his article in Foreign Affairs, Obama showed a dangerous misreading of the issue. "I will join with our allies in insisting not simply requesting that Pakistan crack down on the Taliban, pursue Osama bin Laden and his lieutenants, and end its relationship with all terrorist groups. At the same time, I will encourage dialogue between Pakistan and India to work towards resolving their dispute over Kashmir and between Afghanistan and Pakistan to resolve their differences and develop the Pashtun border region. If Pakistan can look towards the east (India) with confidence, it will be less likely to believe its interests are best advanced through cooperation with the Taliban."

India has faced this argument before and successfully defeated it thus — that Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in Afghanistan is of a piece with the violence in Kashmir. Bowing to the Pakistani argument would be tantamount encouraging Pakistan believe that terrorism as a foreign policy tool actually works. Which, of course would be disastrous to Obama's real objective of cleaning out the Taliban.

Obama, for that matter, the Democrat establishment, are eight years behind the curve on US-India relations, which are on a completely different trajectory now.

On nuclear issues, despite the nuclear deal, India is likely to find the going tough with the Obama crowd. Some of the deal's best known critics like Strobe Talbot and Robert Einhorn are likely to find prominent jobs in the US nuclear establishment — and their dislike of the Indian nuclear deal as well as India's nuclear weapons in general is not going to lessen. If the Bush administration sought to push for an "exception" for India, a Democrat administration is likely to do what it can to mitigate it.

Remember, despite the much touted bi-partisan support for the nuclear agreement in the US Congress, all naysayers were Democrats. Obama himself is the author of one of the biggest "killer" amendments of the Hyde Act, the Obama amendment to deny lifetime supplies of nuclear fuel to Indian reactors, and needed strong political push by Bush and Manmohan to reverse it in the 123 agreement. Obama eventually voted for the deal but there's a sour note. Therefore, getting licenses from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission wont be easy, as non-proliferation wallahs use the famed American bureaucracy to roll back the effects of the nuclear deal.

There is a strong expectation that among the non-proliferation priorities of the Obama administration would be pushing through the CTBT, if he can get his own Congress to agree. That would be another pressure point for India, particularly after Manmohan Singh has gone on record to say that India would not sign the CTBT. On the other hand, Obama supports the global disarmament initiative, started by Kissinger, Perry, Schultz and Nunn. India is a strong votary of the global disarmament efforts too and this could be a better meeting point for the two sides than CTBT. South Block is more likely to push for a full disarmament position than a test ban, which it considers to be "halfway house."

The 2008 election campaign has been relatively free of "outsourcing" as an issue, but it is clear that on principle Obama would oppose outsourcing of jobs to countries like India. But here, the battle is best left to the private sector. It may be a little simplistic to suggest that Obama is categorically against outsourcing. In his speeches, he has said he wants to readjust the tax code to offer more tax incentives to companies who do not offshore jobs, but also that he did not want to close America to the "brightest and best from round the world."

More recently, he has acknowledged the inevitability of outsourcing, saying that "evolutions in communication and technology have sent jobs wherever there's an internet connection; that have forced children in Raleigh and Boston to compete for those jobs with children in Bangalore and Beijing." In fact, post financial crisis, his views are likely to soften further, as analysts suggest that outsourcing may become more necessary, to cut costs and improve productivity. But then again, he may find greater traction for his views in a weak labour market in the US.

Obama has raised the banner for "fair" trade rather than "free" trade, which has already raised eyebrows here among people who look forward to tough trade talks ahead, particularly in the unfinished Doha round. Of course much of the outsourcing is "irreversible" and the debate can safely be left to the private sector to resolve. Will Obama send out different signals on outsourcing of public sector jobs?

As a corollary, what would it mean for more professional and tech visas for Indian professionals to the US? Indian and US companies have been clamouring for more H1-B visas, but its likely that a naturally protectionist Democrat administration with their core constituency being labour unions would find it difficult to increase those numbers from present 65,000.

Then there is China. Like it or not, China and India will continue to be uttered in the same breath for a whole host of reasons. India has very uncomfortable memories of Bill Clinton in Beijing in June 1998, virtually appointing Beijing the "daroga" for South Asia.

Democrats have always viewed the US-China relationship as "special" and generally have a more welcoming view of China. This is unlikely to change particularly in a global situation where China now wields greater clout. India's foreign policy, on the other hand is increasingly going to focus on "dealing with the rise of China" and its implications for India. Whether these two world visions clash or converge need to be seen.

The next few months will tell whether the famed "transformation" of the US-India relationship will continue unabated, halted or slowed down.

The Secret Life of Arushi Talwar.... Death & Deception...Innocence lost!

Born May 24th 1993, Arushi Talwar - to an upper middle class couple; Nupur & Rajesh Talwar- both dentist running their own clinic....

Arushi, all of 14 years old and the sweetheart of dear and near... orkut, movies, music, outings, crushes...in short a normal teenager of the 21st century....

May 16th 2008, soaked in blood, throat slit Arushi was found dead in her bedroom by her family. The Police were quick to accuse missing male serven Hemraj for her death.

Had they conducted their investigations properly, they would have discovered that their prime accused Hemraj, was lying in a pool of blood in the terrace above Arushi. It took them another day to examine the terrace to discover Hemraj's body....

The police were also quick to destroy any evidence that may have led to the culprit with their shoddy investigations. They allowed doctors, not specifically trained in forensic pathology, to conduct the autopsies of Hemraj and Aarushi. While it is established procedure to lift fingerprints (of both murderers and victims) from the skin of the victims, doctors entrusted with the autopsies neglected to call forensic scientists to lift said fingerprints from the cadavers. Besides that, inspite of the fact that they were dealing with a murder case they let the media roam about freely around the appartment.

Arushi was killed again when the police; in an attempt to redeem itself in front of the public, made extremely callous comments about her character... In the end of their media conference, The police were telling two different stories....
1) Arushi was deemed a boy crazy teenager who had an affair with the poor male servent of the house. Her father found them in a compromising position and killed them both in rage.

2) Arushi overheard or somehow got to know of her fathers alleged affair with family friend Duranni and killed her to silence her.

The police themselves werent sure which story they were backing...

Under Nupur's request, the CBI ( Central Bureau of Investigators) took over the murder probe on June 1st 2008.

In any case, Rajesh talwar became prime accused and was arrested on 23rd May. Krishna, his compounder at the clinic was arrested earlier on the 19th. They were both subjected to Narco-Analysis and polygraphs....

The following are important events from this case so far.... (source: wikipedia)

June 27, 2008

  • Krishna taken to Talwars' residence by the CBI and thereafter produced before the special magistrate, where his bail plea was rejected once again. The Talwars' family friends Duranis' Nepalese domestic help Rajkumar arrested on the suspicion of involvement in the murder. Some washed T-shirts with faint human blood stains seized and sent for DNA matching. However, the Duranis (doctors themselves) maintained that the stains could be from the boils that Rajkumar had on his body. Rajkumar had already been subjected to polygraph test, psychological assessment, brain mapping and narco analysis at FSL, Gandhinagar from June 23 to June 26, 2008.

June 28, 2008

  • Rajkumar produced before special magistrate, CBI court, Ghaziabad and is sent to police custody for 14 days. He looked unperturbed with a smile
June 31, 2008
  • A leading news channel AAJ TAK,aired a news through their two journalists SHIVENDRA SRIVASTAVA and TANSEEM HAIDER, claiming that VIJAY MANDAL a new face, is also involved in noida double murder. This was the most authentic details which was aired till date. a very long show detailing step by step information about the incident. finally on July 11 CBI accepted same theory in NOIDA DOUBLE MURDER case.
July 6, 2008
  • A major English daily that, apparently, on the night the murders were committed, the dentist couple Dr. Rajesh and Dr. Nupur left their flat around midnight and came back around 5 AM. They went to a high society party for which some 12 suites were booked in a posh South Delhi hotel.

July 7, 2008

  • CBI came out with an official statement on their site, stating, "A section of media has reported quoting CBI sources that Dr. Rajesh Talwar and Dr. Nupur Talwar were not present in their house on the night of 15th May, 2008 and more than a dozen rooms were booked in a hotel in Delhi. It is clarified that the news item is speculative and not true. Investigation of the case is progressing diligently." Earlier, Dr. Nupur Talwar went to the CBI headquarters and refuted the allegations regarding their absence on the night of the murders. She also expressed her intentions to take legal action against the media house. However, some other TV channels debated the merits of her and CBI's affirmations in the light of glaring gaps in the Talwars' story.
July 11, 2008
  • Vijay Mandal (alias Sambhu) the servant one of the neighbors of the Talwars was arrested by the CBI. Arun Kumar, Joint Director CBI, held a press conference. In the press conference he stated that the CBI was awaiting DNA matching of washed blood stains on Rajkumar's T-shirts. He confirmed the affirmation that the CBI still considered a blind case. He expressed hope that the case will be fully solved very soon and thereafter another press conference will be called. Dr. Rajesh Talwar and Krishna both appeared before special CBI court, Ghaziabad to seek bail. Their petitioned were heard and Dr. Rajesh Talwar has been decided to be released on bail, as the CBI had no evidence against him as of now. Eminent criminal lawyer R. K. Anand undertook to defend Krishna. CBI now tentatively believes some two or three domestic helps and Krishna to be the prime suspects. However, CBI just has forensic evidence which is not admissible as evidence in the court. Still, there is no recovery of the weapon of murder and the two cellphones respectively of Aarushi amd Hemraj.

July 12, 2008

  • Dr. Rajesh Talwar has been freed on bail from the Dasna Jail in Ghaziabad. The news of his release brought back widespread media attention to the case. Channels did all kinds of clever programing to compete for the attention of frenzied channel surfing TV viewers. Vijay Mandal was sent to 3-days' CBI custody by the court of additional chief judicial magistrate Dinesh Kumar in Gaziabad. Vijay Mandal has been accused under 302, 201, 120(B) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

July 22, 2008

  • A bench comprising of Justice Altmas Kabir and Justice Markandey Katju of the supreme court of India instructed the media to be careful. This came up during a hearing on a public interest lawsuit that has raised questions on the media coverage of the high-profile murder case. In the probe, the character of the victim's parents was hotly debated, especially of Aarushi's father Rajesh Talwar who was arrested initially as the main accused. However, no observations were made about the compounder Krishna and the other two domestic helps Rajkumar and Vijay Mandal. In this case, a distinctions seems to have appeared according to the accused persons' class and national identities.

July 25, 2008

  • The Police custody of the accused Krishna, Rajkumar and Vijay Mandal was extended till August 8. The three accused were brought to the Ghaziabad court handcuffed and all linked to a rope. The judge objected to the subhuman treatment of the accused and the police officer tendered his apologies.

July 31, 2008

  • A leading Hindi channel Aaj Tak aired a news report which made allegations of repeatedly drilling desirable information into one of the accused Vijay Mandal, prior to the narco-analysis tests. Further, there were allegations that Mandal's confessions during narco-analysis tests too had many gaps.

August 8, 2008

  • The Police custody of the accused Krishna, Rajkumar and Vijay Mandal was extended for 14 more days, as they were now considered the prime accused.

August 9, 2008

  • CBI director Ashwani Kumar said that the case is still unsolved, as many important corroborative pieces of evidence yet to be found. However, he fully accepted that it was very important that the father Dr. Rajesh Talwar was exonerated otherwise the very sanctity of our family structure would have been challenged.

It remains to be seen if Arushi's murder will be aired year after year on prime television slots under unsolved murder mysteries or if it will just fade into oblivion remaining fresh only in those minds which cared dearly for her............ without begining or an obvious end.........

Blood diamond....

You would think twice before u decide to buy another diamond if you've watched this film...

Exceptional performances by Leonardo Dicaprio and Dijimon Hounusou..

The film essentially deals with conflict diamonds. Conflict diamonds or Blood diamonds refers to diamonds, typically mined in Africa, and sold in order to finance an insurgency, an invading army's war efforts, or to support a warlord's activity(imdb).

The movie begins with a picturesque view into the humble life of Solomon Vandy; a fisherman in war-stricken Sierra Leone... Soon their village is attacked by RUF(Revolutionary United Front) and Solomon & son Dia are captured. Solomons wife and daughters are sent to a refugee camp. Dia is brain-washed to turn into a child soldier like so many thousands... Solomon is made to work in the diamond mines.

It is when Solomon finds a big pink diamond when things turn around. Solomon decides he will use this to bargain for freedom...

Danny Archer is an ex-military Rhodesian and a smuggler who wants to get out Africa and start his life once again anew...

Maddy Bowen is a journalist, tired of writing only superficial stories about war and poverty and hunger... She is looking for the story of her life in Sierra Leone... a story she knows has everything to do with the multinational diamond trading company Van De Kapp... a story for which she has no proof...

Archer hears of the big pink diamond and promises Solomon to help him find his family if he trades this diamond with him... Solomon is apprehensive at first, but goes along anyway coz he has no other options.... Archer convinces Maddy to get them access to the refugee camps to meet with Solomons family... It is now when he realizes his son Dia has been captured...

Solomon wants to get his son back and Archer wants to get into the heart of Sierra Leone to procure the diamond.. Only Maddy has access and Archer trades the proof shes looking for in return for the favor....

The movie glides along picturesque locales as Archer and Solomon run miles to reach their destination....

Dicaprio has grown up....finally... !! He has broken his chocolate boy image and brought forward a new and improved, toughened look...and he has pulled it off sucessfully...

And 9 years after Titanic... "ey em tellin u ma bru... ey em wonce agein a FAN!!!"

Beijing 2008 Olympics Opening Ceremony

The ceremony, held in the National Stadium known as the Bird's Nest, was attended by thousands, and watched by millions more on television. Below are some highlights of the nearly 4-hour performance. (boston daily)
